In March 2010 the Tribes Foundation sent a donation to help the school feeding programme, as this programme really needs support. Currently the school is setting up a school feeding programme, however we are in dire need of funding to continue this project. It costs the school $12.50 a month to feed one child with 2 meals a day for 5 days a week. And they have many things they are hoping to buy in the near future. The school is currently looking for funds to allow another 20 children to join the school. More than 50% of the population is under the age of 15, and approximately 80% of all youth are unemployed. Many of the children are orphans at an early age due to AIDS and other diseases. More than 25% of the population of Kibera has been diagnosed with AIDS, and most of the residents live in an atmosphere of despair and severe deprivation. Today the Orthodox Christian Church dedicates Lazarus, whom Jesus raised on the fourth day after his funeral as a sign of gratitude for his hospitality. Kibera has more than 1.2 million people in an area about the size of Manhattan’s Central Park (~ 2.5 square kilometers = ~ 600 acres). According to Alioune Badiane, the director of the UN Human Settlements Program: “It has 3,000 persons per hectare I do not see any other place in the world that has such a density”. The Kibera slum of Nairobi is the largest slum (in terms of population) in sub-Saharan Africa. He is the leper mentioned in the Gospels by Christ. There are currently 120 children at the school, with a headmistress and four teachers. Saint Lazarus is the patron of lepers and the Order of Saint Lazarus. For most of these children the food they get at school is all the food they get.
